public thinks:
1. Traffic emissions (voted by 62% of people)
2. Rainforest destruction (58% of people)
3. Energy used by industry (55% of people)
4. Release of CFC gases (48% of people)
5. Pesticide pollution (35% of people)
6. Acid rain (21% of people)
7. Energy used in the home (15% of people)
Actual
causes:
1. Domestic (25.7%)
2. Industry (25%)
3. Road transport (22.6%)
4. Commercial/ public sector (14.7%)
5. Land use change (4.5%)
6. Exports (1.4%)
7. Agriculture (0.9%)
There is no doubt that the environment is changing and this in
turn affects us all. But are we fully aware
of the impact this will have on our
lives and for future
generations? Does it mean that we have
to rethink
how we plan our communities, homes, towns and nation?
With
climate change continuing, resource consumption at about 120%
of its replenishment rate, need for biodiversity, quality of
water and air and greenhouse gases we can see that the answers
to these questions is quite obvious.
But let's just look at some of the basic environmental facts
that play a role in such questions and how they affect our
communities and region.
