20% in the Red

The US National Academy of Sciences has confirmed what most people knew already - that humanity has been living beyond its means for a few decades. Resource consumption is now at about 120% of its replenishment rate. As recently as the 1960s we were 'in the black' at 70%. We're now the wrong side of the so-called point zero of sustainability.

Sustainability
We know that the word is a high priority when it comes to the built environment and we know that sustainable development is the simple idea of ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now and for future generations. But do we really know what it means? Can we put it into context to make it easier to understand? In this section we consider such aspects and more.

According to the Government’s own statistics, around a third of the general public claim to have heard of the term “sustainable development”. Probe a little deeper, however, and it quickly becomes obvious that awareness of the term is no indication of comprehension or action. In fact, more detailed research suggests that just seven per cent of people understand what it actually means.

Local Authorities, Developers and Regional Bodies

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important issue for local authorities, developers and regional bodies...
  • Local authorities are promoting sustainable development through LA21, Best Value, community leadership and a duty to improve community well-being

  • Developers are reacting to demands from the local authorities and regional development agencies (RDAs), and proactively looking to demonstrate their sustainability credentials (thus easing the planning process)

  • Sustainability is part of the RDAs' legislative duty, and they are seeking to demonstrate how it is being achieved

  • The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) has launched the Sustainable Communities Plan, to enable the regeneration of key areas in a sustainable manner.
