SAVING TIME

"Instead of a gradual process of change, many of the younger generation, and the survivors, tended to reject all that had led up to the war in favour of a brave new world"

Overview

Click here to return to The Civic Trust home pageTaunton & District Civic Society is a member of the Civic Trust, the parent body of civic societies across the country. However, each of them is originated and run entirely by local residents. The Civic Trust was founded in 1957 to foster high standards of planning and architecture in towns and cities against the background of bomb-damage and inferior post-war development.

Aiming to create a new champion for the built environment the trust and societies have done pioneering work in:

  • promoting town centre improvements
  • stimulating action in the regeneration of towns, cities and villages
  • involving the community in planning and development issues
  • pressing for the reuse of derelict and vacant land
  • protecting and enhancing our built heritage
  • pressing for projects that set national standards
  • improving legislation particularly the Civic Amenities Act, 1967
  • and the nationally renowned Civic Trust Awards.

Sharing the vision of the Trust the Taunton & District Civic Society has created many local 'vision' statements throughout the changing years, shaping the very landscape, communities, heritage and membership that it cares for with much love and civic pride. (To read more about civic pride please see our 'Culture' page).

Our neighbourhood, our locality, our parishes, our housing estates, our high streets, our villages, the suburbs, the recreation grounds, the beauty spots, even the streets are defined by those who live, work and play here. We aim to encourage every Tauntonian citizen to take ownership & responsibility; no matter how big or small, by getting involved. A fundamental aim for our organizations future and that of the Taunton District.

The Future

Adapting to change is one of the most fundamental aspects of human survival and our communities, individuals, societies and organizations are no exception to this rule. With one eye on the past and the other looking forward into the 21st century we must ensure equilibrium exists in all areas of life, especially in the built environment. One that encompasses all generations and ages.

With this awareness we have planned a selection of revitalisation strategies to respond to local and national movement of change.  By inspiring the celebration of our town as a starting point for action to improve the quality of our everyday places, we aim to bring together communities and offer ideas, information and inspiration through publications and projects. We intend to encourage youth participation, senior involvement, education and work to fuse our local distinctiveness with local arts, history and heritage organizations.

Finally, we aim to to be more integrated and businesslike at regional and local levels, with the object of becoming an organization that will make a positive impact on the quality of life in our community.
