FACT OR FICTION—WATERWAYS DO HAVE SO MUCH TO OFFER
Did you know that there’s a 403-mile network of fibre-optic
cables buried under our canal towpaths? Or that half of the
population of the
UK
lives within five miles of one of British Waterways’ canals
and rivers? And that there are 1,000 wildlife conservation
sites and 60 Sites of Special Scientific Interest around the
waterway network?
DEVELOPMENT
OR RESTORATION?
Our inland waterways are a national asset
that can contribute to the social and economic success of
local communities and help to transform local environments.
They pass through every kind of location, from city centres to
the remotest countryside. The demands on them are consequently
wide-ranging, from active recreation and transport,
development and employment, education and leisure, housing and
nature conservation.
But as always, good planning is fundamental to the future of
our waterways. Therefore we invite everyone to our annual
conference with the aim to explain the contribution that the
waterways can make to regeneration and other projects,
planning matters and initiatives through a selection of talks
at
Somerset
’s County Cricket Ground,
Taunton,
Somerset
.
WHY YOU ARE INVITED
Managing and developing Waterways for the
benefit of communities is the task of a multitude of local
planning authorities and voluntary organizations. Moreover,
today's government wishes to promote the Waterways,
encouraging their use and development to increase the
contribution they make to the life of the country.
Determined
to raise awareness and increase the contribution Waterways
make, the Taunton & District Civic Society invite you to
learn more about the history, development and future of this
diverse natural environment.
Drawing together advice and experience
through a range of short talks, we aim to cover some of the
essential subjects of this intrinsic resource with the aim to
help you understand its potential, and that effective use is
made of the planning process to achieve improvement and
change.
During the day you will also hear about
some of
Taunton
’s major design and planning changes to its own river,
bringing together the full use of water and urban living
direct through the heart of the town.
Time permitting, we include a short tour
of the
Somerset
Cricket
Club
Museum
and weather permitting, we will also provide a quick historic
tour of our own town
Taunton
. So why not spend a day with the Taunton & District Civic
Society?
