Culture

T.S. Eliot said "Culture may be described simply as that which makes life worth living".

From arts and sports, from libraries and museums to tourism, parks and recreation, culture is all around us.
But to define Culture is not easy, nor is there a consensus among scholars, philosophers and politicians as to what exactly the concept should include. But we do know that providing a coherent vision in this area is an important part of improving the quality of life, and enhancing the way in which local communities see themselves and are seen by others.

Cultural services themselves provide a wide range of benefits, some of which
are not so immediately apparent. They can help tackle the problems of social exclusion, promote a wider social inclusion, and assist with regeneration. They can also make a significant economic contribution through tourism and the creative industries it breeds. Through music or film, by the arts and crafts, or by strolling through the countryside, we all take in culture in some form or another. So lets celebrate it.

We hope, here, to outline some of the broad-ranging areas of culture that Taunton and the South West has to offer, with links to organizations you can join or contact to get yourself started on the 'cultural trail' and why culture is important.
