Exterior Lighting
A member of the Taunton & District Civic Society had some
issues with street lighting and wondered if there where
guidelines for exterior lighting. So we have done a little
research and found a fact sheet from
The Chartered Institution of Building
Services Engineers, titled Environmental Considerations for
Exterior Lighting.
"The lighting of our buildings, roads, sports fields,
exterior signs and car parks affects those who use them or
view them at night. Light may enhance our world, but may also
cause glare, cause annoyance by unwanted light intruding into
our homes or waste unnecessary amounts of energy and therefore
money. The poles, columns, brackets and luminaries all remain
visible during the day and, without careful design, may be
unsightly."

alternative solution that is environmentally friendly and
sustainable.
A green roof is composed of various layers that create an

Pylons and EMF
(Electromagnetic fields)
At a civic society committee meeting pylons for future
developments was found to be an issue but the subject was
unclear as there is few guidelines or publications on the
matter. Do you have some thoughts on this subject?
We have found a consultation exercise that may assist in the
understanding of this in planning and this is the first
draft of a circular, for issue jointly by the Department of
the Environment, Transport and the Regions and the
Department of
Health, giving advice to local planning authorities on
land-use planning and development (such as overhead power
lines and telecommunications base stations) giving rise to
electromagnetic fields (EMFs).
