Become a Member - Join the Society
Why Join?
If you live or work in Taunton you will be more informed, and you will have an opportunity to make a difference. You will also meet like-minded people who have the good of Taunton Deane at heart – and enjoy the varied programme of talks and trips outlined below. Membership is open to all who are interested in actively furthering the purposes of the Society.
Membership Benefits
Regular Meetings with entertaining and informative talks:
Free to members, open to the public (£2 donation requested). We usually meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month, July and December excepted, in Taunton Library Meetings Room which is in Paul St. in the town centre.
Talks can be by architects, planners (our yearly update from TDBC officers is popular), developers, conservators, environmentalists, archaeologists, historians and others involved in the built, historical and cultural environment.
Members are briefed about recent planning applications, current consultations and matters of concern, and meet other members over coffee. Why not try one of our meetings? Details of the programme are in our newsletter, available on application (see below) or here on this website.
Active Involvement:
As an established member you can join our Planning Group and help decide what comments and representations the Society should make on policies and plans drafted by the Council, or on applications submitted by developers, or in response to national or regional consultations. While Civic Societies are not statutory consultees, their views can carry weight.
We are members of Civic Voice, the national organisation representing Civic Societies, and are also affiliated to Living Streets, which is a national charity that presses for better street design and a better deal for pedestrians.
Trips and Visits:
We tour new, conserved or renovated (and sometimes award-winning) buildings or public spaces, often accompanied by the architect or project manager. We visit to cultural or heritage sites (including industrial heritage). Sometimes we see a site several times as it progresses through construction or restoration. On occasion we visit other towns as guests of their Civic Society or some similar body.
We strive to create a programme that varied, interesting, and related to current developments and events .
Members Newsletter:
Read the latest planning news, articles, reviews, events and activities in our bi-monthly full-colour newsletter.
Be Part of the Future of Taunton and support us.
