There were 675 thousand planning applications received by
planning authorities in 2003/04, the highest number since
1988/89. Householder developments accounted for 54 per cent of
the applications decided. This year 16 per cent of
applications for planning permission were refused, of which 23
per cent resulted in a planning appeal. These figures are from
the National Statistics bulletin Development Control
Statistics: England 2003/04 which is published by the
Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Overall 73 per cent of
all planning decisions were made within 8 weeks, 7 percentage
points higher than in 2002/03. Development Control
Statistics: England 2003/04 provides a compendium of
information on development control activities in England in
2003/04 as well as summary data for earlier years. It includes
tables, maps and charts showing statistics on planning
applications and decisions, planning appeals, enforcement and
'county matters' planning applications and decisions. The
compendium is available on-line at

Much of the information in the bulletin has already been
published in quarterly Releases "Planning Applications
Statistics" in a less detailed format. The next quarterly
Statistical Release, covering the period July to September
2004, will be published on 10 December. |
