Taunton workhouse, 2000

  Taunton Workhouse - Taunton Union workhouse was erected 1836-8 on what is now Trinity Road in Taunton. The architect was Sampson Kempthorne and the design was based on his standard hexagonal plans for the Poor Law Commissioners. A two-storey infirmary block was later erected to the east of the main building, as shown on the 1912 OS map below.. Click here
 

Waterrow

  The History of Waterrow - Waterrow is a pretty little hamlet on the Taunton to Barnstable road on the southern edge of the Brendon hills in the parish of Chipstable, and lies about a mile south of that village.It was known for many centuries as East and West Skirdal until the early 20th century. From the latter half of the 18th century, the name Waterrue, then Waterrow crept in, and for over a century both old and new names were in use. Click here
 

Langport

  The History Of Langort - When in about 880 King Alfred established his series of defensive forts called burhs, each had a defensive role and many also had a commercial role. Langport was at the crossing point of the main road to the west over the River Parrett. Initially the Parrett had been the boundary of the Kingdom of Wessex, but in the late Saxon period, the Anglo-Saxons controlled the land as far as the Cornish boundary. History of The Municipal Building
"The Old Municipal Buildings are located in the centre of historic Taunton. They were founded by Bishop Richard Fox, who was Lord Privy Seal to Henry VII and Henry VIII. He was, at the time that he ordered the building, Bishop of Winchester and Lord of the Manor of Taunton Deane. He died in 1528 and his tomb is in Winchester Cathedral..."
